This Website
It is intended that this website is not just a venting session. We wanted to create a medium through which people can express their ideas and leave constructive feedback about how they think Perth’s places can be better utilised and enriched. This information will be extracted as statistical data, published as stats, sketches and comments in targeted documents, and through holding exhibitions to promote the ideas submitted. We will use these methods to present your ideas and feedback to Councils, to councillors, to property owners and to developers. We intend that doing this will not only increase the amount of placemaking discussion in Perth, but that it will stimulate change with the backing of your statistics and good ideas.
The Creators
This website was created by the Young Designers Group (YDG). The YDG is made up of members of HASSELL’s Perth studio who are hoping to encourage dialogue within the community about the places we live in and use. In 2008 we ran a number of initiatives and hosted talks, public forums, and a student workshop to explore this theme. These events gave various professionals, graduates and students the opportunity to come together and discuss their current work, express their ideas, and craft new ways to invigorate our places.
Acknowledgements
A fundamental element of this website is the ability for the user to carry out a ‘Place Rating’ on a desired place. The questions we ask in that section have been extracted from the successful ‘Rate The Place’ survey form developed by Project for Public Spaces (www.pps.org). We cannot thank Fred Kent and the PPS team enough for their permission to use this and for the providing a tool that can contribute to good placemaking. For more information on their development, methodology and projects, please click here.
We would especially like to thank those who leave their ‘Place Ratings’ and ‘Place Ideas’ on this website. These contributions are generating good dialogue and it is our intention that this feedback will help to enhance the places we live through delivering the information collated to the people who can affect change.
Definitions
Rate this Place
The ‘Rate the Place’ process is a method for auditing a specific place. Through responding to a set of defined parameters, we are able to collate statistics about each place which will give strength to discussions to specific place and thus changes that the users of a place require.
Place Idea
The ‘Place Idea’ form is a method by which we can collect and share specific ideas that we feel might suit a place. Contributors can leave a detailed written comment to describe their idea or initiative and to further demonstrate their idea by uploading photos, sketches or artwork. These could be photos of things that work well in places you’ve visited elsewhere (photos of café’s, street benches or markets for example), or be an image or sketch of your specific idea for a place (a piece of artwork or a type of café for example).
